A special message from the President of CUMaS :

While you’re reading this on your computer/laptop/iPhone/
BlackBerry screen, not many Orang Asli children have access to school books or school teachers, much less a computer/laptop/mobile phone. It’s high time we give back to society and help the native people of our land, the people whom most of us have overlooked and sidelined all this while. We’re not imposing our standards of living on them, we’re just giving them an opportunity to have access to the means for them to determine the standards of living they want to have. You got your chance at the best education in the world (oh yes Cambridge is Number 1 in the world!), how about giving others a better chance at education? Not only it gets you awesome CV points and karma points and ‘pahala’ (if you’re Muslim), it makes you feel good. Join us at the Teach for Malaysia event this Friday on 19th December 2010. Please have a look at the details below and sign up for this event. It is on a Friday night; no supervision work to rush for the next day, no lectures to go for on Saturday (unless you’re a NatSci. sorry too bad!). What can possibly be pulling you back? So come along and have a chat with the inspirational people behind this project. It seems to be high-commitment with 2 years but then again, you don’t know how that would actually work out. Come find out what is exactly in store and what are the other ways you can contribute. Details are as follows below, under 5. Teach for Malaysia Event

1. Launch of CUMaSKini Careers

If most of you have noticed, we have just launched our first edition of CUMaSKini Careers on Monday! This CUMaSKini Careers will focus on career events such as internship opportunities, job opportunities, talks/seminars and any events which are career-related especially those linked to firms and companies back home in Malaysia! This newsletter will only be sent out on an ad hoc basis (and also serves as reminders because we know you tend to forget amidst the craziness known as the Cambridge term). Thus if you see this in your inbox, that would mean that something exciting is coming up soon! Publicity for events by other societies will still be put in our weekly newsletter unless it is career-related.

On a relevant note, do sign up for the events organised by Accenture which is due to be held on Dec1 and 2 as advertised in our first CUMaSKini Careers. Get those brain juices flowing and have a go at consultancy by signing up for the case study competition on 2 Dec 2010! There will be dinner after that for the participants. Free food and fantastic networking opportunities. Now isn’t that worth going for?

3. Play Host to Imperial (reminder)

Members of the Imperial College Malaysian Society will be visiting Cambridge on 27 Nov 2010 and we need volunteers for it! Basically just to bring them around, essentially college-visiting, punting (depending on weather) and formal at Pembroke. It is completely up to you to do what you think would be a good day out in Cambridge! Perhaps tea at a nice cafe (or get Chelsea Buns from Fitzbillies or crepes from Cambridge crepes or milkshakes from Shake Away!), a visit to the Arts and Crafts Market on St John’s Street or a trip to Market Square, a visit to the Botanic Gardens, or perhaps even a trip to the Fitzwilliam Museum or faculties if there are keen beans in your group! Depending on number of volunteers, each will get a number of Imperial students for you to show around. The whole day is very flexible, you can do what you deem fit. In the form here, you can state your availability i.e. day or evening. Day shifts would include lunch, punting and touring. Evening shifts would include touring (continued) and hosting them for a formal at Pembroke (places are limited and priority given to those who volunteer for the whole day). For the formal, please indicate by 20th November if you would like to come.

4. Sports

Badminton is canceled this week as it clashes with MFF. Football will be updated on the facebook group, so look out for it there!

5. Teach for Malaysia in Cambridge
Did you know that only 6 out of every 100 orang asli children enrolled in schools complete their secondary education? And that 4 out 5 working Malaysians are only educated up to SPM level?
Teach For Malaysia is an independent, not-for-profit organisation seeking to put an end to educational inequity in Malaysia. Education inequity, the reality that a child’s origin determinesthe quality of his or her education and life prospects, is the greatest social injustice facing our generation today. Our vision is that one day, all children in Malaysia will have the opportunity to attain an excellent education.

Teach For Malaysia is a partner of Teach For All, a global network of independent social enterprises working to expand educational opportunity in their nations by enlisting their most promising future leaders in the effort. Find out how you can become part of Teach For Malaysia’s leadership movement to eliminate educational inequity in our country!

Join us @ Mind The Gap – A discussion on education inequity in Malaysia and Teach For Malaysia’s story. Meet our Co-founders, Dzameer and Keeran, and learn more about how you can get involved:

What: Mind The Gap: Education Inequity in Malaysia
When: Friday 19th November, 7:00 – 9:00 PM
